Transformers for the Oscar?
The Transformers movies are known for a lot of things. They provide a nice mix of humor, wonder, thrills, and, yes, action-adventure. What they may not be associated with is Oscar contention. All that is about to change with the submission of Transformers: The Age of Extinction to the Academy. And no, the film is not going to be submitted solely for special effects or editing, two common Oscar categories for sci-fi and action adventure films. Okay, the official name for best special effect is Best Achievement in Visual Effects, but why make things difficult?
Transformers: The Age of Extinction is being submitted for consideration in the categories of Best Motion Picture of the Year and Best Director. Tom Rothman, head of TriStar Pictures, comments that the chances of winning either of these are near absolute zero. The film received a dire 18% on the Rotten Tomatoes score. That means 82% of critics gave it a bad review. It seems Paramount Pictures wants to have a little fun with the Academy.
Regardless of what the critics think, the third entry in the Transformers movie did huge worldwide box office of well over $1 billion.
I wonder if a Go-Bots movie would get an Academy Awards nomination.
