Sonic the Hedgehog movie may star Paul Rudd as lead
A new movie based on the popular Sonic the Hedgehog video games has actor Paul Rudd being considered for the lead role. The movie is being targeted for release in 2019 with filming scheduled for Vancouver this summer. It’s looking like Rudd, who stars in this summer’s latest Marvel superhero sequel, could be taking on the role of another character playing alongside the popular hedgehog.
As Screenrant reported on Tuesday, Rudd could star as a police offer who becomes friends with Sonic. Rudd’s character could also team up with the hedgehog hero to try to defeat Robotnik. The movie could also feature characters from the video game including Knuckles, Tails, and Shadow the Hedgehog. With Rudd in a led role, it would add to his recent resume of film credits which includes several big Marvel movies between now and May 2019.
His next big film due out is the “Ant-Man” sequel film called “Ant-Man & The Wasp.” Rudd will reprise his role as the title superhero opposite actress Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas. From there, he’ll return for the role once again in 2019’s untitled “Avengers” sequel film. That movie will involve the second part and finale for this year’s hit movie, “Avengers: Infinity War.”
The new Sonic the Hedgehog game would be based on the popular SEGA character and series of video games which started in the early 1990s. Right now, it’s being reported by Screenrant that the budget for the film is $90 million, which is definitely less than the “Avengers” films but seems like enough for a film involving a CGI hedgehog and other supporting CGI friends. The movie is set to be directed by Jeff Fowler with a script from Patrick Casey and Josh Miller.
It also seems that right now there isn’t a whole lot known about the plot for this Sonic the Hedgehog movie. However, based on the report about Rudd’s character helping out Sonic against Robotnik, that gives an idea who the main villain is. Robotnik, also referred to as “Dr. Eggman,” has been the main bad guy that Sonic battled in several of the video games. The evil scientist is known for creating robots to try to take out Sonic along with his other pals.
Paul Rudd could be a huge addition to a film of this nature, and definitely great for a lead role due to his ability to work well in comedy and action films. He’s already made a big name for himself playing Ant-Man in the original “Ant-Man” and “Captain America: Civil War” films. As of this report, only rumors of Rudd being eyed for a title role have been released, with no other casting information known.
