The ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. absolutely is moving in the direction of superhero fantasy. If the presence of Ghost Rider wasn’t enough to drive this point home, the fifth season of the network series may prominently feature The Secret Warriors. The Secret Warriors previously appeared in the series, but the Inhumans-oriented team did not play a huge role.
The return of The Secret Warriors may end up being as brief as the initial debut. ABC and Marvel both concluded that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. need more fantasy elements to draw in ratings. Bringing back The Secret Warriors might help with this goal. The Secret Warriors, however, are not exactly The Avengers or The Defenders. Their presence probably won’t yield huge ratings, but the presence of any “meta humans” or other super-powered characters should draw in some extra audience numbers.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. definitely would benefit from a spike in ratings. The series is not on the most solid of ground in terms of remaining on air after the fifth season. Marvel and ABC obviously want the series to continue for the same reason all production companies want a series to continue. Revenue does not end when a show is canceled. Syndication, cable airings, DVD sales, and streaming platforms all reflect platforms for continual revenue generation. The more episodes produced by a series, then the more revenue the series can possibly generate.
Another reason may exist why The Secret Warriors are making a return. Since a connection exists to The Inhumans, The Secret Warriors could be used to help hype the arrival of the new Inhumans television show. All televisions shows benefit immensely from hype and promotion. Maybe this “B Team” can help with promotional support.
