Rogue One Set For A Profitable Run

Rogue One has been given a strong word of mouth by critics. Therefore, it is expected to make huge numbers. Therefore, it is going to profit a lot. However, this says nothing of the actual quality of film. There are still a lot of concerns when it comes to the actual film. For one thing, The Force Awakens has also debuted to a lot of good reviews and has made tons of profits. However, the months that followed have brought out people that have stated that The Force Awakens is nothing more than a remake of the original Star Wars back in 1977.

There is also the concerns when it comes to the reshoots on the film. There are a lot of theories of what the reshoots were for. However, reshoots were planned for the film from the beginning. However, among the reports that have been done was that they have reshot a good chunk of the film in order to change the characters and the tone of the film. The director of the film, Gareth Edwards, has stated that he originally wanted Rogue One to be basically a war film set in a galaxy far far away. While people are freaking out about the reshoots because of what happened with films like Suicide Squad (which is more of an editing issue than a reshoot), it is important to wait until the actual film was released.

One thing that is certain is that the reshoots are evident in the progression of trailers. For instance, Forrest Whitaker was bald in the teaser for the film. Subsequent trailers show Forrest Whitaker with a full head of hair. However, the tone of the trailers are pretty much the same. It also feels pretty much like the original Star Wars.

One thing that could throw people off is that there is no opening crawl. However, it makes sense because the film itself is more or less the opening crawl to A New Hope. Of course the film is likely to end right before the beginning of the first Star Wars movie released.

New Rogue One Trailer Released To Warm Reception

A new trailer for Rogue One has recently been released. This is actually more or less an expansion on the first official trailer that was released. While it is not that much different from the first trailer, it does show enough for it to be unique. There are quite a few shots from some of the same scenes. Some new characters get more lines. It shows more of the white suited guy. There is also a bit more action as characters played by Donnie Yen and Felicity Jones take on the empire. Of course, there is also the storm troopers and the iconic shot of the last piece of the Death Star being attached.

Then to top everything off, there is a special surprise appearance of Darth Vader in the film. There has been speculation that he is going to appear in the film. There is also a lot of speculation as to what he is going to be doing. A lot of people have reported on a gruesome scene featuring Darth Vader. Rogue One is shaping up to be one of the most intense Star Wars films in the series, even though this is not part of the core series.

Even though this trailer is pretty good at getting people excited for the film, there was another trailer for Star Wars Rogue One that was shown at an event before the film even started production. It has shown a chilling shot of the Death Star and then it has faded to black with sounds of a battle being played over the Rogue One logo. The overall teaser was intense and chilling. It suggested a tone that is probably more intense than what was shown in the recent trailers of the film.

Rogue One is set for release on December 16, 2016 with Episode VIII being released the the following December. If there is one thing that the new series of films has done, it is bring back the spirit of the original trilogy.

The Return of Star Wars, Too Much Too Soon?

Just a few months away from the release of “Rogue One”, the first in Disney’s new series of “Star Wars Story” films, production is already well under way on a third anthology installment. According to a recent statement by Disney CEO Bob Iger, the currently unnamed film has a writer attached, drafting a script as we speak. Faith in the “Star Wars” brand should come as no surprise after the massive success of 2015’s “The Force Awakens”, but is there a risk of over-saturation?

With two more films in-progress before the first has even released, one has to wonder how popular these “Star Wars” anthology films will actually be. Promotional material for “Rogue One” has certainly been met with positive responses, but it’s no doubt that Disney won’t be expecting a “Force Awakens” level hit. With as much of a driving force as simple name recognition can be, “Rogue One” will have to deal with the fact that it lacks many of the characters and story beats people have come to expect. Through all its high and low points the, main “Star Wars” story has made each new film an event in its own right, something I can see diminishing if audiences are expected to see a spin-off every year.

The idea of an annual movie schedule has had recent luck, admittedly, with Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Marvel Cinematic Universe”, possibly contributing to the company’s confidence in its other franchises. A key difference though, I feel, is the wildly varying nature of the Marvel movies we’ve seen so far. Marvel Studios can get away with one or even two movies a year, but each film more often than not falls under a wildly different genre and storytelling style, despite the common “superhero movie” branding. The world of “Star Wars” is no less large or open for exploration than Marvel’s, but the sci-fi/fantasy nature of its setting will be hard to escape.

Speculation aside, the public reaction to “Rogue One” will be the true indicator of what’s to come. The previously-mentioned “superhero movies” haven’t lost steam after several years, so maybe there is just enough love for “Star Wars” to last forever.
