The 2017 film It was the highest-grossing horror film of all time. Based on the first half of Stephen King’s 1986 book of the same name, It is set in the fictional town of Derry, Maine. The story follows the so-called “Losers Club,” who must defeat Pennywise the Dancing Clown, as well as their own personal traumas. 27 years later, the group must return to Derry when Pennywise reappears in order to vanquish the monster once and for all.
The It sequel is expected to premiere on September 6, 2019. The film, or “Chapter Two,” will cover the last half of the novel and will feature the Losers Club as adults. Production on the sequel is now in the beginning stages after the first film’s success. Gary Dauberman is slated to write the script. Bill Skarsgard is expected to reprise his star-making role as Pennywise.
Beverly Marsh is the only female member of the Losers Club. In the 2017 film, she was played by Sophia Lillis. According to various sources, Molly’s Game star Jessica Chastain may appear in the sequel as her adult counterpart. There was speculation that Chastain would make a cameo in the original film during a post-credits sequence. While that never happened, rumors of her casting have continued.
Andy Muschietti will return to direct the sequel. Chastain has collaborated with Muschietti previously. She starred in his critically acclaimed film Mama.
Despite the news, sources have emphasized that nothing is set in stone. No other stars have been attached to the project yet. Further production on the It sequel will likely begin this summer.
In the meantime, Chastain has kept herself quite busy: she’s been attached to two different projects. One is the next installment of the X-Men franchise, Dark Phoenix. The other is a comedy that will also feature the Shape of Water star Octavia Spencer.
