Logan, which is reportedly the last film starring Hugh Jackman as Logan a.k.a. “Wolverine”, has committed to the R rating. The trailer has dropped recently, and the feel of the movie is that of a western in a post apocalyptic setting. This film is set in a universe where there are barely any mutants left. The backstory behind this may not be revealed until the film is released. This may be the last X-Men film starring or featuring the fan favorite X-Men character. However, there will be other films in the X-Men franchise since the Deadpool movie has turned out to be a success with its R rating.
Hugh Jackman has went ahead and taken a pay cut to make sure that the film gets the R rating that they were shooting for. It looks like it is going to be the second film in the X-Men saga to earn the R rating. However, this is far from the first Marvel franchise to be released with an R rating. Marvel films have been adapted with an R rating all the way back to the 90s and maybe even before then. One of the examples of an R rated Marvel film was The Punisher, starring Dolph Lundgren. There were a couple of other Punisher films afterwards. There is also the Blade Trilogy starring Wesley Snipes. However, studios eventually decided that most of the large budget action films will be PG-13.
Films like Deadpool are showing people that R rated films can be successful. In actuality all that is needed for a film to be successful is a good story and a great execution. This includes acting, editing, and other aspects of the film. However, the ratings system could probably benefit from a new rating. Either that, or the standards for the PG-13 rating could go back to the times when it was first implemented. Either way, Logan is likely to show people that there is a place for R rated films as well.
