Congrats 90s kids! Marvel’s Captain Marvel has officially been declared to take place in the 1990s. I can see the memes now: Only 90s kids will remember Captain Marvel.
Marvel Studios have posted a casting list for us to start guessing about some plot points. Since the film is taking place in the 90s, Samuel L. Jackson will be returning as Nick Fury only this time he will not be wearing the signature eye patch. Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson will be returning to the big screen and Guardian’s villain, Ronan the Accuser, played by Lee Pace.
Other announcements include story plotlines like the Kree Skrull War are showing up for the first time in the MCU. Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, will be playing a significant role in the war. The Kree Skrull war has been mentioned several times in the comics and has impacted many characters like Ronan, Thanos, and the Avengers.
It will be somewhat exciting to see the return of many of these characters. We have already seen some of these characters in previous films, so we will be able to learn more about them. Lee Pace has previously stated his excitement in returning to his role, although, he has no idea what is to happen with the character just yet.
Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has been in plenty of Marvel’s movies. His appearance in Captain Marvel is fascinating because Marvel has stated will not have his eye patch. Nick Fury has had an eye patch in every single MCU movie since the 2008’s Iron Man. Maybe we will see what happened to his eye in Captain Marvel.
Phil Coulson, played, by Clark Gregg, has been in a few of the MCU movies, but has recently been in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD on ABC. His appearance in Captain Marvel hints at a time he worked with Nick Fury as a SHIELD agent.
Captain Marvel comes to theaters on March 8th, 2019 as of this writing. It is being written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. The two have been co-directors since film school and worked on the film Half Nelson together.
