Warner Bros. is continuing to develop a new “Birds of Prey” movie adapted from the DC Comics series. It’s been reported already that there are two different versions of the script going around. While exact details of these scripts have yet to be revealed, it seems that the main focus of the new superhero film will be Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, and Harley Quinn. Both of these comic book heroes may also be getting their own individual films as well, with Harley also part of an upcoming sequel movie as well.
The Screenrant website reported that Justin Kroll of Variety first presented the news regarding “Birds of Prey,” and that he also dropped another bit of speculation for movie fans. Kroll said he’s heard the “Suicide Squad” sequel may start shooting right after “Birds of Prey” shooting has wrapped.
The first “Suicide Squad” film came out in August of 2016 and ended up earning almost $750 million at the box office, despite poor reviews from websites such as Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Despite the negative criticism, it had an ensemble cast that moviegoers paid to see. One of the clear stars of the movie was actress Margot Robbie as the supervillain, Harley Quinn.
The speculation is that Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in both the “Birds of Prey” and “Suicide Squad 2” movies. It’s also being predicted that these movies may arrive by 2020. That gives fans of the DC movie universe a bit of time to check out other projects that are planned for 2018 through 2020. These include “Aquaman” in 2018, “Wonder Woman 2” in 2019, and the “Cyborg” movie in 2020.
While Batgirl and Harley Quinn are mentioned as the priority for the new “Birds of Prey” movie, there may be other characters included in the female ensemble cast. Other characters featured in the rebooted comic series are Black Canary and Huntress, who have yet to be mentioned as part of the upcoming film. The movie has a screenwriter though, Christina Hodson, as well as a director, Cathy Yan. Robbie is also set to co-produce the film.
